Decision WP 5.2

Should communications be informal?

Decided characteristics Communication formality
Input characteristics Business activity (and formality, stability), organisation position, external agent, capability, location, basic task, communication, vertical division of work, horizontal division of work
Guidance This decision consists in selecting informal communications between actors.

Informal communications may be selected to support:

  • Informal business activities
  • Unstable business activities
  • Occasional business activities (low frequency).

Informal communications may be selected first, to try communications and to learn about them before formalising them.

In an organisation where the vertical division of work is weak and the horizontal division of work is strong, informal transverse communications will coexist with formal ones.

Risks: informal communications may be not enforced and used because of the lack of institutionalisation.
